The Power Of Book Covers: Hemlock Veils By Jennie Davenport

They say don't judge a book by it's movie...err...COVER.
BUT they never said we couldn't PRAISE them.

This week's cover:

Hemlock Veils
By Jennie Davenport

Release Date: November 25th 2014
Publisher: Swoon Romance
When Elizabeth Ashton escapes her damaging city life and finds herself in the remote town of Hemlock Veils, Oregon, she is smitten by its quaint mystery; but the surrounding forest holds an enchantment she didn’t think existed, and worse, a most terrifying monster. The town claims it vicious and evil, but Elizabeth suspects something is amiss. Even with its enormous, hairy frame, gruesome claws, and knifelike teeth, the monster’s eyes speak to her: wolf-like and ringed with gold, yet holding an awareness that can only be human. That’s when Elizabeth knows she is the only one who can see the struggling soul trapped inside, the soul to which she is moved.
Secretly, Elizabeth befriends the beast at night, discovering there’s more to his story and that the rising of the sun transforms him into a human more complex than his beastly self. Elizabeth eventually learns that his curse is unlike any other and that a single murderous act is all that stands between him and his freedom. Though love is not enough to break his curse, it may be the only means by which the unimaginable can be done: sacrifice a beauty for the beast.

Book Review: Seduction's Kiss By Alyssa Rose Ivy

Seduction's Kiss
(The Allure Chronicles #0.5)
By Alyssa Rose Ivy

*Prequel novella to Lure (The Allure Chronicles #1)*
Never agree to a road trip to New Orleans with your roommate. At least not when your roommate is dragging you along while she reconnects with an ex-boyfriend. Possible consequences of failing to take my advice:

1) Unknowingly going out with a vampire stripper
2) Getting kidnapped by said vampire's nest mates
3) Falling head over heels for your winged hero

Believe it or not number 3 is the worst one, especially when no one believes you that he exists.

My Review:

May I just start out by saying that this cover doesn't represent this story in any way. This story is at the most PG-13. This cover almost made me not want to pick this up to read because it infers SO much if someone just happened to glance over at what you're reading when you first open this up on a phone or tablet or just scrolling through your ebook library.

The story started out really slow and I didn't really know what to expect. It was your typical college roommates convincing the studious one to take a chance on an "awesome" party. Daisy starts out being the good girl guys don't really pay much attention to. So when she and her BFF get to her BFF's almost boyfriend's house things start out weird. There are two guys that come on strong and you never know what to believe. Every prediction I made was wrong, which was a nice change from recent books.

When the sh*t finally hits the fan things start to pick up. She gets saved from a dire situation and BOOM it's love at third sight from a guy that didn't even give her the time of day at a club. The guy ends up being the future main character: Owen and also a pretty darn awesome supernatural.

Conclusion: I want to know what will happen between Owen and Daisy now more than ever. This prequel teased just enough about him for me to want to find out more. I can also guess at what will happen thanks to Daisy and her stubborn streak.

My Ramblings: Do Women Write Better Than Men?

Hiya My Little Predators!!

A few month ago I partnered up with Grammarly to spell check my book reviews. They have an awesome program that allows you to spell check documents/ college papers/ book reviews/ etc. I learned a lot that month and it was really fun laughing at myself for all the obvious errors C:

Thanks to them I found this graphic:

MenvsWomen Writers infographic
Copyright of Grammarly
I'll start off by saying how much I loved this! It's SO cute and it proves women are superior beings. That's my takeaway of this graphic.

In all seriousness though, I never actually stopped and thought about the differences between male and female authors. I read books based on their synopsis (OK, OK, book covers do help a little). I only lookup authors of books I've finished and loved for more books by that certain author. So I usually find out if a man or woman wrote it after the fact.

Conclusion: Whether the author is male, female or alien, if the synopsis and writing is good, I'm reading it C:

The Power Of Book Covers: Heartlines (Thirty Seconds to Die #3) By S. G. Holster

They say don't judge a book by it's movie...err...COVER.
BUT they never said we couldn't PRAISE them.

This week's cover:

Heartlines
(Thirty Seconds to Die #3)
By S. G. Holster

Length: 200 pages
Expected publication: December 30th 2014

Heartlines is not a standalone book. It is only meant to be read after first reading Thirty Seconds To Die and Terrible Lies.
Sometimes in battle surrender is the strongest move of all.

Brett Owen, the son of a Sentori leader, promised himself he’d never do the work of his brotherhood - killing reborn souls. He’d been naïve to make such a vow. He’d been naïve about a lot of things – such as the bond of family and love.

Taunted by a Sentori hunter, Brett does whatever he can to survive, even if it means embracing his dark Sentori side and earning the unwanted attention of the Sentori leaders. His life had never looked so frantic. And all the while, his true family is infecting his heart and mind.

When his heart is tied to an unexpected soul, he finds himself fighting for a future he desperately wants to live to see. It becomes clear that whatever freedoms Brett is hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Fragile lives that had been carefully woven together will be ripped apart swiftly and easily.

Faith is betrayed.

Remorse and innocence intertwine.

Fate and chance collide to mend the tattered strands of Brett’s heart in the shocking conclusion to the Thirty Seconds To Die series.

About The Author:

This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here's what I can tell you: I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I'm a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70's to a military dad who moved us around the world.
When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don't like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which).

Throughout my life, I've had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down - creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.

It's almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.

Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I'm a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.

I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I've had a few people ask), but I think it's wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.

But it's what I love to do.

Book Review: Drowning In The Dark By Pippa Dacosta

Drowning In The Dark
(The Veil #4)
By Pippa Dacosta

Expected Publication: February 27th 2015

“I wasn’t demon enough to defeat my brother before. Things have changed.”
As the veil begins to fall, and the demons bleed through onto the streets of Boston, Muse knows the battle is lost before it’s even begun.

To make matters worse, Adam and the Institute have captured Akil at a time when the city has never needed him more. Muse believes Akil’s incarceration is a ruse, because if he truly is at the mercy of the Institute, she must choose which side she’ll fight for. Human or demon?

The princes are coming. Valenti, Muse’s immortal half-brother, leads the charge. The Institute is not ready, the people of Boston are not prepared, but one man is. Stefan knows what it will take to beat back the netherworld. Will his demon allow him the freedom to right his wrongs?

Muse’s loyalty will be tested. To save those she loves, she must give up that which she cherishes most. Her humanity.

The Mother of Destruction is about to go nuclear.

My Review:

*I was provided an eARC by the author in exchange of an honest review.

I am both satisfied and outraged when the topic of discussion is this book. I got my heart ripped out and handed to me on a silver plater a handful of times. I almost shed a tear for, dare I say it, Akil. This story was one heck of a ride that ended mid fall.

Muse is just as beat up and bruised as ever. She's been rolling with the punches for some time now. When she finally decides that Akil is a lesser evil, when the consequence is her continued suffering, and asks him for help the institute rears it's ugly head and ruins EVERYTHING. The institute is the thorn in everyone hindquarters.

Akil is as secretive as ever when it comes to what's going to happen in the future (because apparently he's had insider information all along). This time around it seems he's found he has feelings. I don't know if he's being truthful or just messing with Muse's/reader's head.

Stefan's finally back to being a more serious version of his original self. I was hoping/praying/dreaming that would happen. I couldn't give up on him. He has his struggle's, but the important thing is that he's back and willing to help. Stefan ♡ Muse!

That ending made me shed a tear. OK, maybe I paused my reading and had a few quiet minutes of ugly cry. The uncertainty of it all was the worse part. If Muse/I knew for sure what actually happened I could find closure, but even that wasn't possible. The last two lines in the last chapter of this book were one heck of a cliffhanger.

Conclusion: I don't appreciate cliffhangers, especially one as heart wrenching and disturbing as this one. I want the next book. Now.

My Favorite Quotes:

"Don't look at me and see a survivor. I'm not human, not any more. If the demon wants, it gets. I have no control. None."

"Give it room to move, let it fester too long, and hate could smother the brightest spark of love."

"He was afraid of me, for me, for those around me. He was my mentor, my guardian, and if need be, my executioner."

Hiya My Little Predators!!

Welcome back to the Top Ten Tuesday meme!!

It's a weekly feature created By The Broke and the Bookish!

This Week's Topic:
Ten Book Related
(First World)
Problems I Have

1. My friends are tired of hearing that I can't go out with them because I have a VERY important recently released book to read.

2. Everyone thinks I have TOO many books. Well I say 10 shelves is nothing compared to the library I want/need to have.

3. When discussing books I sometimes discuss a character as if he/she were a living breathing person with feelings.

4. Very few people understand my love for books.

5. People always ask me why my backpack is so heavy. My answer: "I may have a book....or 5 in there."

6. A To-Be-Read pile with no end in sight.

7. Dreaming of a day when I'm at the book store and a guy comes out of the blue and offers to buy said book. He'll have my heart right then and there ;)

8. That moment when you're so caught up reliving the last book you read in your head that you miss your bus... (This actually happened to me... twice -facepalm-).

9. I'm guilty of silently judging complete strangers and the books they read when I see them on the bus.

10. I just finished a book and beg a friend to read it, but she simply doesn't have time. Pshh! Freaking MAKE time!
Do you suffer from my book related first world problems as well?
Do you have a few of your own that I forgot to mention above?
Feel free to tell me in the comments below! C:

**Excerpt**
We stood awkwardly for another moment before I had to break the silence. “It’s been a while.”

“Two and a half years.”

“I thought about you the past few Halloweens.”

“I thought about you more than that. It’s actually pretty humiliating now that I’m standing in the same room with you. I don’t know what I was thinking.” She looked away.

“I lied.”

“About?”

I walked toward her. I had to wipe that regret off her face. “I thought about you a lot more than just Halloween.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” I stopped right in front of her. “You were very memorable.”

“So were you.” She licked her lips. Again with the lips.

“I probably should ask you a million questions right now, but would it be okay if we put those off and did something else?”

“I guess that depends on what else you want to do?” Her eyes widened slightly.

“I want to kiss you.”

“I’m okay with that.” Her eyes seemed to sparkle.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

I didn’t wait for her to change her mind. I brushed my lips against hers gently. I was going to keep it short, but I had to know if I was glorifying the last kiss.

She moved her lips against mine, and any thoughts of keeping it short disappeared. I wrapped my arms around her as I deepened the kiss, greedily pushing for access beyond those irresistible lips of hers. She opened up, welcoming me in with the same intoxicating taste as she had the last time.

She moaned, encouraging me to continue the kiss. I didn’t need the encouragement. I lifted her up and carried her over to the couch. I sat down, settling her on my lap. I needed her close, closer than standing would allow.

Her fingers tangled in my hair as she let me explore her mouth. My hands ached to explore more, but I didn’t want to rush it. I’d waited over two years to taste her lips again, and I was going to enjoy every second of it.
