My Ramblings: Harassment & Other Things That Shouldn't Be In My "Job" Description

Harassment & Other Things That Shouldn't
Be In My "Job" Description

Running a blog and writing reviews isn't a formal 'job' for me. It's always been a hobby. As much as I would love for it to turn into a profitable business, I'm just not there yet mentally or writing wise. I will freely admit to that without complaint.

I've been seeing situations where bloggers get harassed/called out by authors more and more as of a few months ago. I'm still left wondering why it's even a thing. Reviews were always for the reader who's considering picking up a specific book or not. I'd even go as far to say that reviews could also be for a publishing company to use in advertisements to prove how amazing/incredible/out-of-this-world that specific book is.

I'm not an author, but I can imagine that reading an excellent review of something that you poured your heart, sweat, and tears into is an exhilarating feeling. You (as an author) shouldn't feel that you have the power and/or obligation to call out a blogger that disagrees with you just because you think that your piece of literature is pure gold.

Reviews, like opinions, are and always will be subjective. No one should feel like their opinion of a certain book is wrong because someone else said so. As long as it's polite and straightforward no one should have a problem.

I've had my fair share of authors getting snippy with me or treating me like I owe them something just because I write book reviews in my spare time. It was never in a public setting and it won't get to that if I can help it.

At the end of the day, we are all human. Independent of who we are or who we are represented by we all deserve, at the minimum, respect. The world and social media seem to have become such a toxic place, in the last few years especially. Let's do our part and treat people kindly. We never know what the other person is going through.

This weeks post was just me ranting and getting things off my chest.
Feel free to give your opinion about this particular subject in the comments below!
I'd love to hear them :)

  1. I have a love/hate relationship with social media because of all the attacks that take place there. I sometimes think reviewers could be a little more respectful, as you know, someone poured themselves into writing that book, but I think authors need to no engage when the feedback is negative.

    1. Respect should be in a social media etiquette book or something. People think it's ok to be rude to others because they're behind a computer screen and virtually "untouchable". It sucks for the rest of us who's looking for interesting interactions with likeminded people.

Authors shouldn't engage with with negative reviews, ever. I can agree with that. But it sucks when Amazon, for example, spotlights the only negative review out of 50 positive ones. I can't help but kind of side with the author :/
