Book Review: Alpha By Sybil Bartel

Alpha
(The Alpha Elite #1)
By Sybil Bartel

Billionaire.

Mercenary.

Navy SEAL.

The Teams trained me to be a killer. War taught me to be ruthless. Then an ill-fated mission proved I was human. Combat wounded, cut loose by the Navy, I had a choice. Fade into obscurity or use the skills I had.

Alpha Elite Security was born, and three years later, my company was the most sought-after security contractor in the world. Five global locations, ten company jets, every one of my employees military trained—we were the best of the best. Overseeing operations, I didn't have time for women or anything other than growing my company. My success rate unmatched, I'd never lost a client.

Then I got a call, the only call that would get me back in the field. She was missing. The woman I'd destroyed seven years ago. Now I had one objective.

Code name: Alpha.

Mission: Extraction.

ALPHA is the first standalone book in the exciting new Alpha Elite Series by USA Today Bestselling author, Sybil Bartel. Come meet Adam "Alpha" Trefor and the dominant, alpha heroes who work for AES!

My Review:

* Spoilers are marked in red.

The first two-thirds of this book was a dream. The last third however left a bad taste in my mouth. The writing was great as always with this author's books and the overall pace was steady but on the slower side.

Maila (pronounced May-La according to the author in her FB group) was great in the beginning. Though her impulsiveness really screwed her over in a BIG way. I hated how she ran away from Adam right after the news was dropped. I understand what was going through her head but I still disliked it. In the last third of this book, she lost all the personality that was given to her. Her emotionless mask got annoying pretty damn quickly.

Adam started off as a decent guy. He wasn't overtly "dominant" and "alpha". He was a nice guy who liked control. However, I had a big problem in the last third with his actions. He, in essence, blackmailed Maila. He gave her an ultimatum that was basically sleep with him or never see him again. After everything that she had just gone through and he still had the nerve to do that to her. It just felt icky and rubbed me the wrong way.

After I read that, the book kind of lost its magic. I ended up skimming the rest of the book. It was an okay ending. I liked that there was no surprise pregnancy considering past actions in the story. I loved seeing characters from past novels in this book though. I'm looking forward to future books in the series!
