Book Review: Prisoner Of Night By J. R. Ward

Prisoner Of Night
(Black Dagger Brotherhood #16.5)
By J. R. Ward

From #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward comes an unforgettable story of passion and vengeance in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.

When Ahmare’s brother is abducted, there is nothing she won’t do to get him back safely. She is unprepared, however, for the lengths she will have to go to save his life. Paired with a dangerous but enticing prisoner, she embarks on an odyssey into another world.

Duran, betrayed by his father, imprisoned in a dungeon for decades, has survived only because of his thirst for vengeance. He has been biding his time to escape and is shocked to find an unlikely and temporary freedom in the form of a determined young female.

Battling against deadly forces and facing unforeseen peril, the pair are in a race to save Ahmare’s brother. As time runs out, and the unthinkable looms, even true love may not be enough to carry them through.

My Review:

This is what I wish every Black Dagger Brotherhood novel would be like! It's one condensed complete adventure/story prominently featuring one couple and setting up a possible next book in the last chapter or two. The problem I have with her intertwined storylines is because it's rare that I want to read both of them. It's happened and when it does it does amazing things for the story/series/characters but when it doesn't I get to do a lot of skimming (which I don't necessarily love).

I loved Ahmare's spunk. She does what has to be done to save her family and if that means going to the end of the time and back with a stranger then that's what she's going to do. Though I'm not a fan of insta-love, but it worked for this novel and its short timespan.

My heart broke for Duran. He's never had much of a "normal" life and it's been even worse in the past 2 decades (being a prisoner and all). He had his ticks but there was a sweet and caring side to him that never really got a chance to flourish before now.

This novel had me so deep in its clutches that I ended up reading until the wee hours of the morning. Overall this was a captivating story with a briskly paced narration that worked in its favor.

My Favorite Quotes:

"We don't get to choose all our destinations [...]."

"Some things were inevitable. Some leaps were taken before you were aware of going over the edge. Some songs called you to magically."

"Sometimes the worst part about trauma was not going through it. It was the aftermath, when you were free."

  1. Great Review, Mikky. I've only read book 1 in this series - IKR, call myself a PNR fan! Lol! - but I understand completely about story arcs meandering their way through a number of books, it can get frustrating when the other aspects of those books don't grip you.

What a sacrilege! Shame on you! LOL ;)
Yeah but I'm still sticking around, so she has to be doing more right than wrong in my eyes :P
