Release Date: Jan 7, 2022
Approximate Running Time: 6 Hours
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is... different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina. And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night... Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

My Review:
* Trigger Warning: Gore, Violence, Dog Deaths
I've tried picking up books by Ilona Andrews in the past and have never had much luck. There's always a detail I nitpick here and there that ends up in me DNFing the novel. This book was almost that. This being produced by Graphic Audio was the one thing that kept me coming back. I can rave about how I ADORE Graphic Audio. This version of this book is what I wish every audio book was like. I'm happy to say though that by the third hour I was invested in the story and it ended up being a fantastic read!
I loved the universe the author set up with this novel. I don't think I've read something exactly like this. A semi-sentient house is one thing but the way it almost becomes a main character and has an integral part in the story is something else entirely. Can you tell I loved the story by how much I'm gushing over it yet?
Personally, I wished the romantic subplot was more front and center. I usually read paranormal romance or urban fantasy with more prominent romantic elements so this was a baby step out of my comfort zone if you can even count that? 😅 BUT I'm definitely Team Werewolf at the moment!
The ending was kind of bitter-sweet. The heroine chose to in essence be stuck where she is because it's her job. The big bad was defeated and the two guys went their separate ways. I don't know where this story is going but I'm invested from this point on regardless.
