Book Review: Touching Fire By Airicka Phoenix

Touching Fire
(Touch #2)
By Airicka Phoenix

Published: January 2014

Finding her past was supposed to end the nightmare. Only it was just the beginning.
Entrusting the fate of the world, not to mention her and Isaiah’s life to a father she’s never met is a big leap of faith on Fallon’s part. But it’s a necessary risk. Ashton is the key to protecting Isaiah and keeping her out of Garrison’s clutches. He is also the only one who can tell her what she is, except what she learns is that she is from a world that is far more dangerous than anyone could possibly imagine.

As her powers grow out of control, Fallon must pick between her mortality and a legacy that does not include Isaiah. She must summon the courage to face a destiny that will test the boundaries of everything she has ever known. But most of all, she must protect Isaiah from the monster within herself and trust the man whose toxic blood runs through her veins.

Danger builds as power clashes between two evils, both seeking her to tip the scales to eternal darkness and suffering.

Can humanity rise to face an ancient calling to which Fallon is powerless to stop? Can she protect those she cares about, or will their blood forever stain her hands?

Touch Vengeance. Touch Malice. Touch Fire.

My Review:

This is one of those series that takes forever to release, but when it releases you know your in for a VERY wild, plot twist infested ride. This was actually one of the FIRST books I've re-read. Please keep in mind that when I read a book, unless it means something to me or is signed, I usually never pick it up again. I LOVED that this was one of the exceptions.

There is NEVER a dull moment in this story. There's an I-hope-it-becomes-a-love-triangle-but-not-really kind of thing going on. There's also a lot of action and people being deceived. Don't even get me started on the amount of plot twists being thrown our way. I didn't know up from down half the time in this book. It was SO refreshing C:

Fallon still doesn't have all the solutions to her problems. Heck, she's a teenager. She's supposed to be insecure and dreaming about Isaiah *wink wink*. Add in her would-be-friend of a dad and Isaiah's faith in the guy and something smells fishy. There were so much revelations in this book. I can't comment on them because it would give a lot away. So I'll just say: It was AWESOME and leave it at that.

Isaiah was Isaiah. He was caring, sweet and believed in her the entire way. Because Fallon doesn't know what to do and keeps taking other people's help, she gets in a lot of trouble and, consequently, Isaiah usually takes to brunt of the attack and Fallon goes half crazy (literally. Read the book. You'll understand why C:).

Archer was crazy cute with his one liner's! He's the this-should-be-a-love-triangle-but-I'm-on-the-fence-with-my-feelings guy. When he enters the story you know her dad is up to something and that Archer is CLEARLY involved. You just don't know what for sure. He was still an awesome character and I hope to see him in future novels.

That ending left me on the edge of my seat and totally craving more! Why the mean cliffhanger Mrs. Phoenix? Cliffhangers really hurt my feelings =/

Favorite Quotes:

"Life really was one big box of freaking mystery chocolates and I was quickly becoming diabetic."

"I'm a sin, not a virtue." .....Insider C;

"Your pathetic morality, your human drive to shun things your puny mind cannot comprehend will be the nail that sails your coffin. Don't be blind, Princess. Open your eyes and see the truth I am giving you because is it the only truth you will ever have."

My Review:

*I received an eARC from the author in exchange of an honest review.

This was a very enjoyable and fast read! It kept me interested and wanting more until the very almost end. It had everything I was looking for in a novel: romance, fighters (*wink, wink*) and a little action of the scary variety in the end.

Anna was a good character. She wasn't a pushover, was hard headed when the situation called for it and cared more of everyones well being then her own. The only problem I had with her was her allowing her lust and passion get in the way of rationality. It's called protection. No matter how you feel in the moment, you NEED to use it. Be responsible, don't have a child you know you're not ready for.

X (AKA Xavier) was a tortured alpha male player. Let me explain that a little more. He had a ruff childhood and because of that, to him, love is something impossible to achieve. He's also a fighter/actor and his profession implies it all: He's huge. Before he met Anna he used to sleep around, A LOT. Anna was actually a little TOO understanding, but then again it's a fictional story, somethings need to happen for the plot line to move along.

"He may come on a little strong at times, but from the few interactions I've had with him, I can tell he's got a good heart."

Anna's father was a jack@**. Just because he's a religious man, doesn't mean he gets to hit his daughter. She's also 21 and a collage grad. She can damn well go live with her aunt in another city if she chooses too to escape him. It's the 21st century hun, the world has evolved. Learn to deal.

"I don't like your tone, or what you're implying. I'll have you know I'm a Christian man. I only inflict physical punishment when necessary. It's my right as her father."

The ending was just mean. That was a huge cliffhanger. I NEED the continuation to this story. It hurts that you'd do this to us Mrs. Valentine. With all that being said, I can't wait for Book #2 to find out what happens next!

Favorite Quotes:

"So you're saying you want to become my personal bodyguard and protect me from the big bad city?"

"Don't apologize for asking for respect. You deserve it."

"I know from experience that sometimes home isn't always the best place to be."

**Excerpt**

I stare into his eyes and trace the scruff along his jawline. “It’s okay to be vulnerable sometimes, Xavier. You can be that with me. The past is just that—the past. I base how I feel about you on the man I know you are today. You’re protective and strong, and above all else, you have an amazing heart.”

He closes his eyes and leans into my touch. “You don’t know what you’re asking for. I’m so fucked up, Anna.”

I bite my lip and cradle his face in my hands. “You’re not. I wish you could see what I do.”

I know we’ve had problems, and our relationship is nowhere near perfect, but right now I don’t care about any of that. Every inch of me craves him. I want him to know that me matters to me—that I’m not going anywhere.

I lean in closer to him and he closes his eyes again before resting his forehead against mine, resisting my kiss. “If we smash these fucking friendship rules there’s no going back. Once I have you—that’s it, you’re mine. I won’t allow another man to take what’s mine. Do you understand?”

By Georgia Bell

After her father dies, Rachel realizes she is scared and stuck. Scared of heights, of cars, of disasters harming the people she loves. Stuck in a life that is getting smaller by the minute. My Almost Review:

* I was provided a free eCopy by the author in exchange of an honest review.

I wouldn't call what I'm about to write up a review pre se, but I couldn't help getting emotionally involved with this novel. I'll admit I couldn't stomach more than half of this novel. I was going absolutely crazy over the heroine's actions and I just need to vent. So the following rating is for the half of the book that I read.

My Rating:

Before you say ANYTHING about this review, please just read what I have to say.

Right off the bat I started this book thinking that it was going to be an awesome read. Why, you ask? Well who doesn't want to read about an immortal who had a girl be born to be the death of him, but then ended up loving her and NOT wanting to die. Crazy, right?

Well, not so much. The heroine (whose name I can't even recall) had a lonely almost depressive life. It was the same routines everyday. She went to work, said no to going out with friends and some times saw a stranger following her and never said anything to anyone. Normal, right?

It was like she had stolkhome sindrome. She felt 'safe' when she was being stalked. She considered this creeper her 'guardian angel'. May I also mention that this immortal has been following her around since she was a BABY.

After they officially met, she then started to obsess over when she'd see him again. She'd also state that she was in love with him. Really, hun? You haven't even said 3 words to him and your in love with him? More like lust, if you ask me.

At the point where stopped in the story, I didn't even get to know Mr. Immortal (whose name I also forget). From the little I read about him he seemed creepy, secretive and like he was holding a part of him back or something.

Things I'd Like To Know More About (In This Novel):
* How a Century old being would fall in 'love' with a teenager?
* Why the heroine seemed like she had OCD and kept doing and redoing the same things more then 5 times?

If you have the answer to my questions

My Review:

*I was provided a free eCopy by the author in exchange of an honest review.

This book was awesome! It was a very nice continuation compared to the first book in this series. It doesn't pick up RIGHT where book 1 left off, but a little while after it.

Ally still has more questions then answers. Because of that, the first half of this book dragged on and on. I was being slapped upside the head with plot twists left and right. They weren't revolutionary plot twists. No, these were really annoying little problems that just kept popping up. Every. Single. Page. It got annoying VERY fast. After the first 50% passed, the book started going somewhere. Answers came slow, but steadily. Though, by the end I still had more questions then answers.

I just don't know if I liked either "hero". I just have mixed feelings when referring to Marik. Sure, what happened in Book 1 got resolved this time around. BUT, I still don't know if I can really trust him after he proved to be so easily persuaded because of a "magical" vision.

Michael this time around, just proved my point. He was the wholesome, all around, cute guy. The key word in that last sentence is WAS. He proved that he could also be manipulated VERY easily. I just think Ally deserves more from a guy.

Ally's mother/sprit/suspicious-person-numero-uno, was just there to complicate the story. Until now, no one even knows what she's up to or which side she's on. I don't know how the character's even trust her. Just because she's Ally's mom, it doesn't mean she's on the "lesser evil" side.

The ending had a MAJOR plot twist. I was SO surprised. The whole novel was building up to that EXACT moment. Now that was a revolutionary plot twist. Because of that ending I will be rocking in a corner awaiting the release of Book 3.

Favorite Quotes:

"Love does not destroy. Love has many faces to it. Love heals and comes in the most unexpected places and when you are in your darkest hour, that same love will find you and life you back up."

"They were all robbed. All of her tomorrows were gone. She could see a world stretching out before her, one filled with chaos, with fire, with death and destruction."

"After moving heaven and earth he finally found her."
