The Last Ten
Books I Abandoned

These "reviews" are not meant to be taken seriously! They're usually more like rants than actual reviews. These are my frustrated thoughts after not finishing a book I thought I would enjoy. Please take these with a big spoon of salt!

(Wolf Rampant #1)
By Aimee Easterling

PMS is no fun for werewolves.

Forget the full moon, female werewolves shift uncontrollably at that time of the month. But after years of practice, teenaged Terra learns to squash her wolf, which allows her to flee the repressive village where she grew up.

A decade later, Terra realizes she has an even worse problem. After hiding from her wolf for so long, she is now shiftless, unable to change back into canine form.

When her father shows up with an ultimatum, Terra knows she'll have to learn to shift or return to her place in her family's pack. Will Wolfie, a nearby alpha who's more wolf than man, be a stumbling block in Terra's quest to maintain her freedom?

As Terra struggles to escape two werewolf packs that seem poised to suck her back in, the real question becomes --- does she really want to stay away?

DNF At 1 hour and 30 minutes

This is yet another one of those books I've been sitting on for quite some time. Dare I say a year or more? I've restarted this book over 3 times in that period of time and it still isn't for me. There's so much info dump and more telling than showing. The story doesn't have a nice flow and pacing. The characters feel wooden and one dimensional. This is the second book I've read by this author and it's looking more likely that her work just doesn't suit me.

Wolf Born
(Lunar Academy #1)
By Alyssa Rose Ivy & Jennifer Snyder

Four Houses. Traditions. Secrets. And Romance Waiting At Every Turn.

Welcome to Lunar Academy. Which House Will You Choose?

Nadia Hazel came to the academy for its academics. What she finds is a side of herself she never knew existed. One that breaks rules, let's curiosity lead her places it shouldn't, and thinks Ryan Grayson looks really good naked.

Ryan Grayson has never given much thought to Nadia Hazel—until now. She's smart, beautiful, and just the kind of feisty he's been looking for. So what if she isn't from a prestigious family like his?

When the two find themselves pulled into a secret organization hidden within the academy, they discover chemistry and mystery make one heck of a combination.

My "Review":

DNF at 55 minutes (audio book sped up to x1.25)

I can see where all the less than stellar reviews are coming from. This story had SO much potential but fell so short of everything. There was no worldbuilding whatsoever (at least in the hour I experienced). The other houses were just mentioned by name. No inner monologue to describe what each one represented in-depth, why there were only four and not let's say 1000? No background as to why they're in existence in the first place. These are all basic questions that make the world in a book feel more realistic and plausible.

To Love a Bear
(Lumberjack Bears #1)
By Emilia Hartley

So long as the guys call him Boomer, Theodore Parker is content with his life. He has a place to stay, work to do, guys to hang out with — or fight with — when he wants, and the wilds of Montana to roam when he needs to be alone or go full bear. He has everything he needs.

At least he thinks he does.

Then, while he’s out logging with the guys, he finds a woman on the side of the hill, hurt and unable to remember who she is. When he takes her home to help her recover, he knows it isn’t a permanent arrangement. He knows she’ll have to go back to her old life someday.

But the more he’s around her, the more he realizes his life isn’t complete without her. He’s not so selfish as to doom her to a rough life with a bear-shifting mountain man, though. He wants what’s best for her, even if that means leaving him, destroying his contentment forever. So, he protects her and keeps quiet about his shifting, so she isn’t forced into something she doesn’t want.

What Emmy White wants, once she remembers herself, is Boomer. And safety from her past. What she doesn’t want is another relationship with a secretive, overprotective man. She thinks Boomer might be different, but how can she trust him when he won’t do the one thing she’s asked of him — give her the power to defend herself from the monster lurking in her past?

My "Review":

DNF At 44%

This novel wasn't bad but it wasn't exciting either. I felt like I was pushing myself through it with so much force that I lost whatever emotion the author wanted to envoke in me along the way. The characters had some really great moments but for the most part, they were overall bland. This is a trope I usually love to read about but there was nothing new about it. I would have loved a twist somewhere along the way. The writing didn't help things along and everything was going at a very slow and methodical pace (which I don't usually appreciate very much). My dislike of this book ultimately comes down the personal taste and that's totally okay. You can't win them all, right?

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter
(Nava Katz #1)
By Deborah Wilde

An all-male brotherhood hunts demonic foes. But their biggest threat could be a lowly–and snarky–female initiate who’s gonna show these boys a thing or two about how to really slay a monster…

Twenty-year-old Nava Katz has filled her life with a never-ending string of casual hookups and a carefully cultivated rep as a hot mess. The only relationship she gives a damn about is with her hard-working twin brother. But she accidentally torches his life-long dream when she disrupts his induction into a demon-hunting fraternity and somehow steals his destiny.

Horrified she’s now expected to take his place, Nava finds herself with something she never wanted: responsibility. But the super dude secret society is not cool with a woman in their ranks and forces a surly but smoking-hot ex-rock star to try to keep her in line. And with a vengeful major demon baying for her blood, her best chance for survival may be to convince her new teammates they need her better-prepared sibling too.

Can Nava get her act together in time to fix her biggest mess yet and start terminating like a boss?

DNF At 3 hours and 53 minutes (Audio Book)

This is the second time I gave this book a shot and I still can't put up with it enough to finish it. I know for a fact that I got an hour or two into the audio book before this year but that apparently was before I updated my Goodreads page with my DNF's and the reason behind it, so oh well.

The main character was too much. I love sassy characters whose second language is sarcasm, but she was just too deep in it. It was just too in my face and it took the shine out of everything. There was never any downtime either. It was witty comeback, after sassing someone after sarcastic inner monologue. It was always go, go, go and that gets tiring after 1 hour(s)+.

Supernatural Academy: Year Two
(Supernatural Academy #2)
By Jaymin Eve

Year Two at the Academy! The year of purple.

Maddison James learned a lot about life last year. Only important stuff, of course. Like how to breathe under water, how to turn an arrow into a weapon, and how to fall in love.

Asher Locke. The one who stole her heart. The one who showed her the truth of her past and ... hopefully her future.

Now it's just time for them to live happily ever after.

Only the gods have different plans. And with Atlantis rising, Maddi isn't sure she'll survive long enough to even finish her second year, let alone have any sort of future.

Even worse, the sadistic Atlantean gods want to break her before they kill her. But Maddi has been underestimated before, and she has hidden strengths they'll never see coming.

Year of purple ... bring it on.

DNF At 1 hour and 44 minutes

I've been holding out on this book for months now and it still isn't doing anything for me. I'm currently almost 2 hours in and I don't want to be in Maggi's head anymore. I like that she's with Asher but I would love it even more if an actual storyline aside from the romance also got started. It's been almost 2 hours of them doing things together, of Maggi wanting to be with him, of him sending her messages. Get on with what I want to read about: the plotline. I like romance in stories. It's a must for me in most books I read, but even I couldn't take much more of this lovey-dovey sh*t. And that's coming from someone who has been reading paranormal romance and urban fantasy almost exclusively for the last 2+ years. This book ended up just not being for me. This isn't the first time and it won't be the last, unfortunately.

What was the last book you DNFed?
Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Great list! I'm sorry to hear these books didn't work for you.

    1. Thanks! It's okay! Not all books are for everyone ♡

  2. Shame about Supernatural Academy, I like Jaymin Eve's books, but I'm not up to that one yet.
    Here's my list for TTT

    1. Jaymin Eve's books are usually a hit or miss for me. It sucks this one wasn't a hit ♡

  3. I've come across Aimee Easterling before in various boxsets and anthologies. Her stories were always among the lowest rated for me. Her writing style isn't for me either, Mikky. There are so many authors out there that I can happily avoid her work.

    1. I've seen she's in a lot of boxsets and anthologies but I never really gave them a second glance unless an author I know and adore were also in them. All books aren't for everyone and I also can happily go about my life without reading another one of her books ♡
