Book Review: Deeper By Robin York

Deeper
(Caroline & West #1)
By Robin York

Length: 400 pages
Published: January 28th 2014
Publisher: Bantam

In Robin York’s sizzling debut, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

My Review:

You know that moment when you see/read something shocking yet can't bring yourself to look away? Well that described this book perfectly. It was such a well written account of what so many women go through. The ending brought tears to my eyes. I need a happily ever after for West and Caroline. After all they've been through (for different reasons, of course) they deserve one.

Caroline is a victim of revenge porn. She went from this sheltered and happy girl to one who would flinch every time a guy even looked that her funny. She would rather wallow in her own misery then look for help with friends who simply weren't there anymore and her dad. The evolution of her character in this book was inspiring to see.

West is the dealer you hate to love next door. Beneath all that muscle is a guy who's working his butt off and trying to take care of his mom, kid sister and himself in the process. After he opens up and becomes less of an insensitive bastard, he has an amazing side to him that no one sees.

This was an amazing read. I was right there with West and Caroline through it all. I laughed and cried, became angry and annoyed, right along with them. This is a very emotional read which I wouldn't think twice to recommend.

My Favorite Quotes:

"Because the thing about being a good girl is, you spend your whole life developing a finely honed radar for detecting anything that could potentially cause people to love you less."

"[...] your whole world can pivot on a few words."

"Being polite is a form of social lubrication."

My Rating:
& ½
