My Ramblings: To Do Or Not To Do: Accents

To Do Or Not To Do: Accents

I love accents, but that doesn't mean I'm good at them. On the contrary, that I'm horrible at them. No matter how hard I try, it never sounds like anything believable in my head. When I'm reading every character, regardless of where they're from or what accent they supposedly have, goes into an automatic american accent specifically from the Boston MA region in my head. That happens because it's my accent, therefore, the only one that sounds right, to me, when I'm reading.

I've learned that audio books are great for listening to stories for characters that have accents. The narrators make the book come alive better than my brain does when it comes to accents. I've also had quite a few surprises when listening to the audio book of a book I've read in that past. It gives the story a whole different perspective in my head and makes for a very interesting reread.

Have you mastered the art of believable accents while reading?
Or do you rely on audio books to give you a taste of something you simply can't accomplish?
Let's discuss in the comments below!

  1. I have terrible accents in my head, and usually skip the accents, even when they write them in the dialog.
