My Ramblings: Reading in Extremes (All or Nothing)

Reading in Extremes
(All or Nothing)

In the loosest of terms, I like to live life in extremes. For the most part, it's usually all or nothing. In makeup, I either choose a nude lip or a dark color (black, red, blue, etc.). In movies, it's either mindless fluffy romance or, I've learned recently that I really enjoy, thrillers. My tastes usually end on opposite sides of a spectrum and it's only making it harder to pick books that I'll have a chance at liking.

I've realized that my taste in books has become similar to my taste in movies. I went through a phase of reading quite a few contemporary romances (which isn't usual for me). What they all had in common is the fact that at least one of the main characters were somewhat "broken" or had gone through something serious that could "potentially" ruin that relationship. On the other end of the spectrum are the MC romances and the few suspense/thriller novels I have sprinkled in between (which surprised me by how much I ended up liking them).

I've realized that there doesn't seem to be a middle ground in anything. It's interesting, to a certain degree, to pick books on opposite sides of a spectrum that only has romance as the common factor. After a while and a, at least, 6+ month book slump things are starting to look dire. At this point, I don't know where to even start trying to "resolve" this so-called problem.

Do your taste in books land on opposite sides of a spectrum?
Let's discuss in the comments below!

  1. I actually used to be more of a mixer, but lately, it's primarily contemporaries. If a book is too far out of my comfort zone, I usually don't enjoy it as much, which is why I have been requesting mostly contemporaries. I might go for a high fantasy or thriller from the library, but I am more cautious with my review books, because I want to like them.

    1. Way back when I first began my reading journey, I was also a mixer but I seem to have lost that throughout the years. I've taken a step back from requesting arc's because of the spectrum my tastes land on. Books for me, nowadays, are either complete hits or complete misses. The only thing separating an average book from a DNF is the amount of time and effort I've put into reading it and if I find it's worth it or not :)

  2. I tend to ~enjoy~ more fantasy, but I also LOVE light-hearted, mindless contemporaries. All with romance, of course. xD I feel the same about liking completely different things!

    1. If there's no romance it isn't a book for me. Good to know I'm not alone! :)
