Book Review: Darkest Before Dawn By Pippa Dacosta

Darkest Before Dawn
(The Veil #3)
By Pippa Dacosta

Published: October 15th 2014

“It’s too late to save myself, but I’ll save her, even if it kills me.”

When Akil leaves a nine year old half-blood girl on Muse’s doorstep, it’s not long before the demons come hunting, but this time Muse isn’t the target. The Institute, Muse’s immortal brother, and the Princes of Hell, all want a piece of the little half-blood. What’s so special about Dawn, and why has Akil conveniently disappeared just as Muse needs answers?

To save the half-blood girl, Muse must first save herself, but is it already too late? Muse’s humanity is failing. Her demon hungers. The darkness coiled around her heart lures her toward madness. And all that stands between Muse and her demon’s lust for destruction, is the hope that some half-bloods do get happy endings.

The veil weakens. Titles will fall. A new Prince rises. And if Muse can’t stop them, the demons will have their day.

My Review:

* An eCopy was provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

I really, really, REALLY want to strangle something. You're probably wondering why the sudden violent streak, well I blame Mrs. Dacosta for creating such a wonderful and heart wrenching book.

It just isn't getting any easier for poor old Muse. This time around she's been shot, caged and manipulated....so the usual. Akil has dumped a 9 year old for Muse to keep "safe" and things just go to Hell (almost literally...hehe). Conclusion: The crap Muse is putting up with is officially Akil's fault.

Akil has once again gotten his way with events. Which was VERY surprising because for a minute there I thought Muse was actually his equal and could handle him and decipher his diabolical and very well played plan of attack.

As much as it pains me to say, Stefan is just...URGH! I don't even know how to finish that sentence. I am 100% Team Stefan so I was pretty angry with the turn of events. Not necessarily on what happened, but with the unknown. I pretty much speed read through the last chapter so I may have missed/misunderstood something, but I did not like the turn of events. I need facts not maybes, theories or assumptions.

Just one more thing: The epilogue was a jaw dropper.

Favorite Quotes:

"You must have me confused with another sociopathic demon."

"Sometimes, there is o right thing. Sometimes wrong wins, and that's okay. Life can't be distilled down to right and wrong. It's about that messy grey area in between and how we deal with it."

"A Prince of Hell feared me. What kind of monster did that make me?"

"I am chaos eternal. I desire everything in this world and the next offers. I am greed. I hunger. [...] Oh, how I hunger... I want the pathetic mortals of this world to bow before me. I want all that they own, all they desire, every marvelous creation of theirs, but there is only one thing in this world that I need, and that Muse, is you."

Book Review: Alpha Divided By Aileen Erin

Alpha Divided
(Alpha Girl #3)
By Aileen Erin

Life has been crazy since Tessa McCaide moved to Texas. She’s gone from being a normal-ish girl with visions to a super-powered werewolf. She’s fought off vampires and broken a nearly unbreakable curse. And she’s got a hot mate, Dastien Laurent, to keep her busy.

Things are looking up until the full moon ceremony rolls around. Before Tessa can strengthen her bond with Dastien, the local coven crashes the gates, demanding that Tessa—their heir apparent—be returned. If the pack wants to avoid a war with the witches, handing Tessa over is the only option.

Tessa doesn’t want to cause an all-out fight, but joining a dark-magic coven isn’t on her to-do list, especially if embracing her magic side means parting with Dastien. When the coven leader tries to control Tessa with dark-magic, Tessa realizes she has to dismantle the coven or prepare the pack for war. Either choice will change her life—and her world—forever.

My Review:

* I received an eARC in exchange of an honest review.

This series holds a special place in my heart. I just fell in love with the story, the way it's executed and Dastien (of course). It's so hard to explain what made me fall so hard for this book.

Tessa is, yet again, in trouble. She and Dastien just can't get a break. This time, when everything seems like it's falling into place destiny puts another twist on things. Her fight is now with the witches (AKA Brujas) and trust me when I say things get UGLY.

Dastien was amazing. We got to see a different side to him in this book, which was his vulnerability. It seems like Tessa has more control of her feelings for him then the other way around. Which even though was awesome to see, still hurt because I didn't want poor Dastien in pain.

The ending, personally, left a little to be desired. All we got in this book was three moments where the love birds were themselves and with each other. I wanted more. That's the reason why I knocked off a star...Just saying Mrs. Erin C:

Favorite Quotes:

"Life didn't always work out a planned. No matter how badly I wanted it."

"I wanted a future with him."

"I don't think you get. I can't do this without you. I tried, but I was a mess. I don't know when my world started to revolve around you - around us - so much, but it does. (...) So you'll have to excuse me if I try to feed you a little more because I heard that while you were away, you'd been starving yourself."

Book Review: Wings Of Hope By Pippa DaCosta

Wings Of Hope
(The Veil #0.5)
By Pippa DaCosta

Length: 51 pages
Expected publication: October 20th 2014

**Short story prequel to The Veil Series**

"I am his muse. But not for long..."

When Mammon, the Prince of Greed, 'acquires' a half-blood slave known as 'Muse' for three nights, and bespells her with tales of a world where people live like kings and queens among towers of steel and glass, the seed of hope takes root in Muse's soul. But hope, for a half-human half-demon creature like her, is a dangerous thing. Especially when that tentative hope springs from the honeyed words of a Prince of Hell. What is Mammon's price for freedom?

Meanwhile Da'mean, her ruthless owner, would rather see her dead, than free. She belongs to him. She is his muse. And no beast will take her from him.

The world of the elemental demons is harsh and violent. Muse's kin are merciless, blood-hungry beasts, but little do they know, Muse has something far more dangerous coiled inside her, desperate for a taste of freedom.

Her humanity.

My Review:

* An eARC was provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

This prequel was very enlightening. It was a very interesting back story for Muse. It takes place before the first book in the series and it shows her and Akil in a whole new light.

At first it made Akil seem like the protector, but by the end it showed him in his true nature. As much as I wanted to like him, I still can't get over the fact that he's a manipulative bastard. The end result will ALWAYS benefit him. It doesn't matter who gets caught in the cross fire (which is almost always Muse).

It also shows a whole new Muse. This is before she had her thick "human" skin and before she had the courage to stand up to the King Of Greed in the human world. She was a slave in the demon community because she's a half-blood. It's been beaten into her (quite literally) that she's no better then dirt, so why should she be treated with respect?

Conclusion: I can't wait to read Book #3 in this series!

Favorite Quotes:

"One day you will have vengeance, little half blood. You will stand upon a wasteland littered with your dead kin and you will be free".

"This will end. All things end. Perhaps this time, it would end for eternity".

"My icy visage covered a lifetimes worth of degradation. I'd forgotten what it meant to care".

Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Saying “I love you'' doesn’t erase the old scars and fears.

"I love you to insanity. I'm not even sure if it's a good thing.'' — Duke

Skye is trying to overcome what happened with Sean. Now that she’s slowly healing, both physically and mentally, she’s determined to do something she should have done sooner.

She’s meeting twice a week with a new, very young therapist, Dr. Marshall.

There, she’s able to talk freely, unwind, and question things. Most of the sessions she talks about herself and her hangups, along with her relationship with Duke, which is still on rocky ground.

"I want to taste his sweat. I want to hear his groans. I want to feel him inside of me.'' — Skye

But while Skye is slowly getting back on her feet, Duke feels like he's drowning. He’s afraid of pushing her too much, of initiating intimacy, and it’s weighing between them. Moreover, knowing that he's not the one she’s talking to anymore is making him feel things he never thought possible.

"It’s a matter of when I’ll stop fighting." — Duke

As days pass, Duke is showing over and over how vulnerable he truly is and how Skye has more power over him than she ever imagined.

When Skye sees how they keep hurting each other, she’s determined to do everything in her power to make things right, no matter what the cost.

But one thing is still sure; she can count on Duke whenever she needs him, even if they disagree and fight. When Duke loves, he loves with everything he’s made of, the good and the bad.

"Loving her is confusing, making me afraid of myself and what I can do ... because I can break us both." — Duke

Change Up
(Patch Up #3)
By Stephanie Witter

Releasing: late November.

In Patch Up and Fix Up you had Skye and Duke’s story.

Now, it’s time for Derek and Kate to find their path.

He fights for the people he loves.

She fights against love.

Kate Andrews is starting her second year of college in Seattle. She is happy to leave Chicago and her dysfunctional family behind to be with her friends again. Growing up she thought that her parents' loveless marriage was all her father’s fault, but that summer she discovered that things are so much more complicated in life and love. Her mother is bipolar. That doesn’t mean her father isn’t unfaithful, nor does he support her and her choices. Additionally, he isn't a great father or husband, but it brings a new perspective in her life; the way she envisions love.

Derek Williams graduated college a few months ago, and while he moved back in again with his single mother and teenage brother, he never thought that he would be struggling with two crappy jobs. He is not succeeding in either of his jobs or in his countless plans for the future. Instead, he’s trying to bring back his brother and set him on a straight path, while trying to avoid the wrong crowd hounding him, thanks to his brother. Together with fighting his mother on her lack of support in their family, this all has caused chaos.

“Yes, my life is a fucking mess. I have nothing for that girl who deserves everything, and yet I still can’t just sit on my ass and wait for the next asshole to pursue her.‘' — DEREK

Both of them are very different. Their upbringing is opposite; their vision of love and life contrast, and yet …

“I want to open up to it, open up to the possibility of heartbreak even if I’m scared to death. I’m ready to change up.'' — KATE

They’re both still hung up on each other. They can’t forget that one night they shared months ago, can’t ignore their attraction and quickly maturing love. They match in every way that matters, but time and time again their respective families are getting in the way.

"He’s the commitment kind while I’m anti-commitment." — KATE

Are they willing to fight for each other? Is Kate ready to risk her comfort and everything else for love? Is Derek prepared to chose which battles are worth fighting for?

“It’s never been friendship, and it’ll never be.’’ — DEREK

Blog Review Tour: Mortal Enchantment By Stacey O'Neale

Mortal Enchantment
(Mortal Enchantment #1)
By Stacey O'Neale

“Mortal Enchantment spins a unique twist on elemental mythology. This series is not to be missed.”
- Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

In Kalin Matthew's world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she's built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she's attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.

Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.

To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements—power Kalin has yet to realize.

As Rowan attempts to train her, a war looms between the four courts. If Kalin fails, her father will die and the courts will fall, but the betrayal she’s about to uncover may cost her even more...

My Review:

I absolutely adored this book. I can't really say what made me like it so much. It was beautifully written, I loved the narrators voice and how every character had a distinct personality. The plot twists were exhilarating and kept me guessing until the end. This is defiantly one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading this year.

I really, really, really, really liked Rowan. Having read the prequel helped A LOT, but even though he was secretive and mysterious, this time around, I still found a spot in my heart to actually care about him and his well being. Though it seems like Rowan and Kalin's relationship became what it became out of the blue, I still enjoyed this book.

Kalin was the protected, innocent daughter that had to make a big change. Though it started out very stereotypical, by the middle of the book you could almost see the originality flowing off the plot line. I liked Kalin as a character. She wasn't whiney and annoying. She actually tried to fight for what's right and questioned traditions that were imposed on her. I liked seeing she had a back bone.

I loved seeing Marcus again! I also didn't realize that Ariel was his love until it was mentioned to Kalin in the novel. Oops...=]

Even though I loved this book there were a few things that rubbed me the wrong way. The first was the expression 'Whatevs'. I have never used it and haven't heard anyone use it so it sounded forced to me. Also when Kalin drinks the wine (if you read the book you will know what I'm talking about). My question becomes: Why accept an OPEN drink in the first place? Last but not least, I hated the part when Kalin just blew up at Ariel for no apparent reason, except maybe her paranoia.

Many thanks to the author for not leaving off with a cliffhanger. I'll be anxiously awaiting the continuation of Rowan and Kailin's adventures!

Favorite Quotes:

"I gotta say, I was really feeling the robe, but there's something about a girl in cartoon pajamas that does it for me."

"Underneath the surface was a city thriving on the addictions of its patrons."

"Are you doubting my mad sword skills?"
