Book Review: A Shade Of Blood By Bella Forrest

In A Shade Of Blood, Bella Forrest transports you deeper into a unique, enthralling and beautifully sensitive story. Prepare to be lost in its pages…

My Review:

Oh god...I feel like the author just put me through a cheese grater and has left me to try and mend myself back together. There was SOOO much drama and confusion that I was ready to give up at various points in the novel, but just when I decided "I give up" the author would throw a plot twist that I just HAD to continue with the story. To say it was exhausting is putting it mildly.

All the redeeming qualities Sofia had were washed down stream after the decision she made in the end of book 1. This novel did nothing to lessen that. After she did what she did and got back home (which she did to appease Ben) all she did was whine that she wanted Derek. It was really annoying since she really had NOTHING to go back to. So why go back, right?

When Sofia finally found her backbone and put an end to the annoyance that was Ben, she went and did something so out of character that I actually had to re-read a couple paragraphs. Multiple. Times. It felt so forced her having done that and fallen right back in love with him after she finds out all that he did. I just didn't see the logic behind it all.

In this novel we also find out A LOT about Sofia's long lost family. Though I can't get into detail on it since I would be giving two plot twist's away and that really wouldn't be fair. To. Anyone. It's what kept me reading this book and what will probably make me buy and read book 3. Darn you, plot twists.

I despise Ben. According to him the world would be a perfect place without the Vampires. I call BS, Ben. The world was NEVER perfect. If it weren't for the Vampires, he would still have to deal with gangs, violence in general, assassinations, drugs, I could go on for days on end. Conclusion: He's a hypocrite. He also did have a way of convincing Sofia to do his every bidding (which was getting on my nerves). When he finally corned her and kissed her I thought I was going to hurl....Just. Don't. Go. There. Mrs. Forrest. Ben was also on a role about wanting vengeance. Everything bad that happened in his life (ex: loosing Sofia, his getting a paper cut, him having a head ache) was then blamed on The Shade.

While all the above was happening Mr. Derek Novak was using the excuse of "the love of my life is gone" to go CRAZY. By that statement I mean rape, murder and everything in between. From that point on I started to see that he had no redeeming qualities. I, now, don't see what Sofia sees in him.

The ending was mind blowing. After the plot twist of her father I thought that was it for the story. Mrs. Forrest is crazy good at slapping you in the face while pulling the rug from under you with a plot twist. I would congratulate her, but I'm just to angry at the moment.

Favorite Quotes:

"The island is several shades darker without you. We'll miss your light."

"The darkness is coming."

"Even the lionesses fear the king of the pride."

"Oversized meany..." - Abby (Ben's little sister)

Book Review: Becoming Alpha By Aileen Erin

Becoming Alpha
(Alpha Girl #1)
By Aileen Erin

Tessa McCaide has a unique talent for getting into trouble. Then again, it isn’t easy for a girl with visions to ignore what she sees. Luckily Tessa and her family are leaving California and moving halfway across the country, giving her the perfect opportunity to leave her reputation as “Freaky Tessa” behind.
But Tessa doesn’t realize that kissing the wrong guy in her new Texas town could land her in far more trouble than she ever imagined. Like being forced to attend St. Ailbe’s Academy, a secret boarding school for werewolves.

Even if the wrong guy did accidentally turn her into one of “them” and doom her to attending the weirdest high school ever, Tessa can’t help her growing attraction to the mysterious Dastien Laurent.

When vampires attack St. Alibe’s and her visions pinpoint an enemy in their midst, Tessa realizes that boy drama and her newfound canine tendencies might just be the least of her problems.

My Review:

*eARC was provided by the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I loved, loved, loved this book! I stayed up until the wee hours of the night reading this! It was that good. It's not perfect, but it sure was entertaining and I am crazy for book 2 at the moment.

Tessa was a very forgiving (it become annoying how forgiving she was by the second half of the book), would-die-for-a-normal-life girl. The problem is she has to wear gloves/cover her skin at all times because every time someone touches her she has visions/reads emotions and it really takes a toll. That's probably why she tries so hard to fit in with a clique that has nothing to do with her interests and due to peer pressure decides to drink a shot of tequila at a party (P.S. She had never drunk alcohol before this).

Dastien was the hero. Tessa's and his relationship was also insta-love and just for that the book became your typical love triangle werewolf story.
"The spark was Fourth of July-sized with Dastien."
It was a turn-off, but the story (apart from that) was pretty creative and well written so I continued on. Dastien is the all around nice guy with an ahhhmazing body and has an actual brain that functions. What I hated about him when he was introduced was that he ignored her and glued himself to Queen Bitch (Imogene - Even her name sounds Queeny to me -shudders-). Sure, we later found out it was at her parents request to give her "space", but all it did was add unnecessary drama to a very good action story.

I will admit that I was Team Chris in the beginning. Especially since I imagined him as Liam Hemsworth....Dreamy -sigh-.
"Chris was nice and funny and easy to be around and also hot."
He was there for her in the beginning unlike Mr. Insta-love.

Meredith is the BFF I will always want to have. She's caring, understanding and is always on your side. No. Matter. What. & Best of all she wasn't plotting to take Dastien away from Tessa, unlike Shannon.

The ending was nice. Sure, a little predictable and finished WAY too fast, but nice. If it were any other author she would have stopped the book with the kidnapping and leave everyone hanging. You know what? I respect Mrs. Erin because she didn't do that. She knows there are a lot of subplots to be resolved in the story still and she can always integrate another big bang at the end of book two. So it's a win-win.

Favorite Quotes:

"Yes. I want you to continue talking so I can finish eavesdropping."

"It was like I walked into a living Abercrombie Ad." (My thoughts: Why isn't my college like this? URGH...Real life sucks....=/)

"Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I tackle you again?"

My Thoughts:

This is the best book I have read this year. Why you ask? Well it's the most ORIGINAL piece I have read that kept me guessing throughout the end. It is an on going series (which is killing me)!! If you haven't read it, do so! You won't regret it! BUT, I have to point out that this is a YOUNG ADULT novel NOT Adult. It actually pushes the limit for a YA novel.

Thank You For EVERYTHING!!

Oh Wow!

This year has just moved so fast! Seems cliché, I know, but seemed like just yesterday that I was considering creating a blog dedicated to the books I love.

I want to thank everyone who gave me a chance, all the publishers and authors who let me review amazing books early on and especially you. Yes, you. The one reading this post right now. It means the world to me that I have the chance to make a dream come true and that I have supporters. I've always loved books and always wanted to put that to good use. With this blog, I think I can do that. Or at least give it a try C:

Having said all that...

My Review:

This book started out like any other vampire book out there and since I'm a sucker for kidnapped by the big bad vampire novels I was pulled in from the start. Though by page 70 (eBook) I had a sense of déjà vu. Since I watch and read A LOT of vampire movies/TV series/books, I guess it was to be expected.

Sofia was WAY TOO innocent and, since she's SO lucky, got pawed at the first 5 minutes of being captured. The trauma only piled on from there. I found it funny that almost every vampire pushed her up against a wall (and not in the sense of what you're thinking. Get your head out of the gutter C:). Though there was insta-Love found in this novel it did take a while to to appear and by then it was somewhat believable (if you tried VERY hard to just ignore it).

We'll get on the topic of Derek in a minute. First things first: Ben. I have never loathed a fictional childhood BFF as much as I did Ben. From what Sofia says about him it seems like he controls her (even without knowing it he influences her). It seems like if he tells her to jump off a bridge she'll actually consider it if he keeps pushing. She has to have a backbone and make up her OWN damn mind.

Derek. I respected him from the beginning. He wasn't overly nice and gentle, but he wasn't a jackass either. He respected her and she respected him. Towards the ending (just when their relationship was getting somewhere) the story had to end and Ben had to appear. I totally intend on finding out what happens next C:

Favorite Quotes:

"(...) blood runs thicker than water."

"She was no longer mine. In fact, it was the exact opposite. At some point during all those times I'd spent with her, I'd become hers."

"Whether I like it or not, home had become wherever Derek Novak was."

**Excerpt**

He tensed. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I want in.” I settled on the corner of the desk and levelly met his look of disbelief. “I want you to take me to his place so —“
“No.”
“I can do this.”
Rui stood and walked back to the car.
“You don’t know what I can—“
“I don’t care what you think you can do.” He whipped around to face me, his expression hard. “You don’t know jack shit about my —“
“I know what he does,” I said quietly. “I know what he did to you. To your broth—“
In one fluid movement, he swept me off the desk and shoved me against the wall. Two hundred pounds of muscle locked me into place and confirmed Troy’s story.
Rui’s actions revealed a high degree of training, a controlled, physical strength I’d initially suspected in the school courtyard.
An icy shiver shot down my spine. If we were thrown into a ring together, he really might give me a run for my money.
Muscled forearm pressed against my neck, effectively pinning me in place.
“Rui,” I said through my teeth. “I can stop him.”
The smart thing to do was walk away and let him, his father, and Troy sort out this mess. Sure, Troy would get the short end of the stick, but that wasn’t my problem.
Except my conscience wouldn’t stop prickling. I couldn’t let it go.
Maybe because Troy reminded me of past regrets and this was an opportunity to change the outcome. Maybe because the white-hot anger in Rui was a festering wound that felt all too familiar.
Hell, maybe I just really wanted to prove to my mother I could do this.
I could stop one human male.
Rui’s voice dropped to a whisper. “You don’t know shit.”
Cold eyes bored into me, hard and demanding. Magic bubbled through my veins. Beneath the anger, Empath sensed determination and worry. It was almost as if he was willing me to understand…
My gaze flickered up. Harsh light illuminated the ugly industrial walls of the garage, bouncing off metal and steel. Something winked in the corner.
Lens reflection meant surveillance. The entire place was probably bugged.
I blinked once. Slowly.
Rui studied me for a moment longer before the grinding pressure against my windpipe eased. I coughed, lungs desperately sucking in air.
Without another word, he exited the garage and I followed. Flickering yellow streetlights cast sickly triangular patches across the asphalt. Night air closed in, thick and humid.
The relentless drone of the Route 60 overpass grew louder and more insistent as we neared the main street.
“I’ve seen you,” he finally said. “At Rave.”
The club was only a few blocks away. “Yeah.”
“You like working the floor.” I felt the weight of his glance through the shadowy gloom. “But you don’t buy.”
“Not my thing.”
“You sound offended.”
I shrugged. “Needing something makes you weak.”
“Sometimes what we need is good for us. Sometimes it’s not. But we all got something we’re addicted to, girl.” He laughed, a harsh rumble of bitter amusement. “You’re just addicted to physical release.”
The scrutiny made me uncomfortable. “So what’s your addiction?”
“Belief.” He pulled out a pack of cigarettes. “You working with the cops?”
“Not exactly.”
Empath swept through him, attempting to make sense of the puzzle that was Rui Vergara. He wasn’t lying or concealing who he was. The pain was there, hot and unstable. A thread of something wistful, too. Sadness? Maybe regret.
But there was also ruthlessness and a barely controlled fury that came from being kicked down one too many times.
Who was it directed toward? His father? Troy? And how quickly could it shift to me?
The lighter’s flare briefly highlighted the solemnity etched into his skin. He seemed far older than his age.
“No, you’re not a rat.” He took a long drag and tilted his head. Wariness heightened at the shrewd look in his eyes. “Just another person who has something to hide.”

My thoughts:

I love, love, love this series in general. The character voices are so fresh each time. You can tell that each one is her/his own person. That is hard to a pull off in a novel. It's what makes the character's so easy to get to know and become on with the character. I can't wait for the next installment C:
