First up:

**Prologue**

They say each dead body, a human corpse, has a scent all of its own, a sweet-sour smell. A cadaver dog picks up the odor as clearly as a mother recognizes a photo of her child. Of course, I wouldn’t know, for I am no dog. I might as well have been, the way I’d stooped to yield to my basic instincts. My mind wandered to her, what her unique smell would be when, and if, they ever were to find her.

After what happened, I decided to write out thevents that led to that day and details in case Id missed something, or might need it for defense, or in case thefound me dead. My relatives might need to piece together the things that had spiraled out of control, if they wanted to put me to rest, to forget me altogether. That would bleast painful for them. I nodded to myself as I sat in the car. I thought of my most favorite girl in the world: Lilly. At least Lillyd have my dogHolly, to remember mby.

My friends used to call me Brie, short for Brianna. But, I could hardly count anyone a friend any more. Ihave to resort to back-watching if I wanted to survive.

Book Review: Seven Years By Dannika Dark

Seven Years
(Seven #1)
By Dannika Dark

Published: October 22nd 2013

Seven years ago, my world ended.
Seven years later, my new life began.

It's been seven years since Lexi Knight lost her brother in a tragic accident. On the anniversary of his death, her brother's best friend shows up unexpectedly - a man she hasn't seen since the funeral. He is no longer the boy Lexi once knew, but a dangerous-looking man with tattoos and dark secrets. He broke her trust and abandoned her family, yet what he reveals makes it impossible to stay angry. Lexi has been secretly infatuated with Austin since childhood, so finding out he's a Shifter just makes him sexier. Dammit.

Austin Cole has returned to the city where he grew up, and just in time. He's lived a hard life these past seven years, and the shadows of his past are threatening to destroy Lexi's family. It's time that she learned the truth about her brother, but there is a shocking twist that Austin never saw coming. Now he must protect her family when her mother and sister wind up in mortal danger. Will Lexi learn to accept the truth about who he is, and can Austin salvage a relationship from the ruins of their past?

My Review:

I was really surprised by how much I loved this book. Why you ask? Well I've tried reading the Mageri Series By this author and it just didn't appeal to me. So I decided her books deserved one more chance. That was one decision that I didn't regret. I just love books that portray non-machoist wolf packs with endearing characters.

Austin was amazing. He was caring and protective, but still had that aura of danger and all-man to him. That's hard to pull off with a character, but Mrs. Dark definitely pulled it off.

The heroine, Lexi, was no disappointment in being his other half. She actually had a backbone when it came to dealing with Austin. She was also stubborn, understanding and never made a decision irrationally (which was a GREAT quality to see in a female character).

Austin had a lot of brothers. Most of which I don't even remember very well. The one that I do remember is because of Maizy (Lexi's little sister, who's about 6-7 years old). His name is Denver (but Maizy named him Denny, which is sooo sweet). He's the all around nice guy that chose to be Maizy's protector. When it comes to his wolf it's the complete opposite in terms of personality. His wolf is the most vicious and dangerous of the pack and it's just the sweetest thing when that same wolf goes out of his way to make sure no harm comes to Maizy.

I hope the next book(s) in this series either continues with Austin's and Lexi's story in their point of views OR each book after this one is dedicated to the (love) story of each brother and anyone else who eventually joins the pack from this point on. The second option would just be AHHHMAZING C:

Favorite Quotes:

"(...) Karma just happened to be a man names Austin Cole."

"Doesn't matter if we heal or not; some scars are beneath the skin and mark us in ways we least expect."

"Be honest; my feelings won't be hurt and I swear I won't be crying over a gallon of ice cream at two in the morning with Denver, talking about my feelings and s***."

Book Review: The Naturals By Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Naturals
By Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.
What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

My Review:

* eARC was provided by the publisher in exchange of an honest review

I had very high expectations from this novel considering that I've read and LOVED Mrs. Barnes Raised By Wolves Series. The book didn't disappoint! Sure it has a love triangle and, like always, I hated one of them and have a team picked (Team Dean!! All the way!!).

What drew me into the story was the plot in itself since it reminded me a lot of the Darkest Powers Trilogy By Kelley Armstrong. Don't get me wrong, it's not a copy. It's actually the opposite while still keeping me entertained. I just loved that!

Cassie didn't know where she fit in the world. With a marine father and a mother who met a fatal end early on in her life, she was just drifting. She was always on the outside looking in, especially with the abilities her mother developed in her. With luck (or, some may want to call it misfortune) the FBI invites her to a "Program" and that's when life gets interesting.

I loved Lia as a character. She was spunky, not afraid of the consequences and just plain awesome. Also, her fashion sense is to die for. Though I wouldn't want to live with someone with that personality, she's scary sometimes...

Sloane was the crazy, statistics guru in the house. If you needed help with your math homework, she's your girl. She was also very nice and loved exploding things.

Michael was the all around nice, wholesome american guy. He has the charm, walk and attitude of "high school nobility" (Cassie's saying, not mine). He's all that and much more, but in the beginning what made me not like him was how he came off to Cassie. Always guarded, never straightforward with answers. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

DEAN!! (Notice how I screamed that out and used bold lettering to emphasize my love -wink-). I have a soft spot for tortured souls, who are really good deep down and that deserve a new start. That's exactly what Dean was. Beneath all that ruff exterior, lives a caring, frightened boy who's afraid to become like his father. Nuff said.

Fortunately, I didn't guess who the culprit was in the end. YAY! BUT I was left with a cliffhanger. Come on! Sure, this cliffhanger was rather small compared to other books, but still. Really? You just had to throw it in there, didn't you?

Favorite Quotes:

"No expectations, no disappointments."

"A lot has happened. You have a lot to figure out. I can be a patient man, Colorado. A devastatingly handsome, roguishly scarred, heartbreakingly courageous, patient man."

"I could instinctively understand other people - their personalities, their beliefs, their desires - but when it came to what, I was just like anyone else, muddled and confused and stumbling through."

Author Info:

I am a new author and have recently discovered that I am now addicted to writing. My first novel, Saving Rain, was originally going to be a single novel, but it quickly turned into a trilogy. I fell in love with the characters and had to continue with the story to delve more into their intriguing, dangerous lives. The Rain Trilogy is a powerful story of abuse, human trafficking, and beautiful, redeeming love (new adult contemporary romance suspense meant for readers 18 and older). Saving Rain and Healing Rain are live now, and After the Rain will be live by the end of October 2013.

I live in the mountains with my family, and I love to read, hike, and travel when I am not writing. I am a sucker for romance, especially a book with a strong alpha male who has a sensitive side. I also enjoy a good mystery and thrillers. My favorite author is James Patterson, he is an amazing writer. With being a newbie, I am just learning all the ropes, but I'm loving the wild ride. I plan on writing for as long as my fingers have dexterity.

**Excerpt**

As Molly straightened up, the man slipped the wire over her head and twisted it around her neck. She struggled, but he pulled the garrote tighter and tighter.

I was screaming at the top of my ghostly voice, for all the good it did me. I moved up behind the man and beat at his back with closed fists--fists that slipped in and out of his back without ever making real contact. He shuddered a little--clearly he was one of the very slightly sensitive ones--but he didn’t loosen his hands.

I reached up and tried to grab the wire, tried to pull against the pressure he was exerting on the wire and it did loosen for an instant. But only for an instant. The living have more control over solid objects than the dead do. I never resented that fact more than at that moment.

But I kept trying. I kept trying as Molly’s face turned purple, then blue, then black, kept trying even as she drooped in the man’s grip.

Then he loosened the wire and it was too late. I watched that wispy, light-on-fog life force slip out of Molly and move on to wherever it is that other people go when they die. I was glad she didn’t show up next to me as a full-blown ghost. At that moment, I wouldn’t have wished my impotent half-existence on anyone.

I couldn’t help thinking that if I’d been alive, I might have been able to save her.
If I could have cried real tears, I would have. As it was, I was sobbing hoarsely and calling the man every dirty name I could think of.

I was still cursing as I followed him around the kitchen. First he opened the pantry and pulled out a box of Hefty garbage bags. Then he grabbed a knife out of the block on the counter. And finally, he picked up Molly’s body and carried it to the bathroom.

Book Blitz: The Tempering By Adrianne James

Hello Everyone!!

Today is the Book Blitz for The Tempering By Adrianne James!! The cover is just sinister and sooo cool! I can't wait to read this book!! I'll move this to the top of my To-Read pile C:

Title: The Tempering
Author: Adrianne James
Publication Date: September 13th 2013
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

Synopsis:
The Mythology department at prestigious Harvard University is tiny—and Mackenzie Duncan has just been selected as one of the lucky few. Her love for myths and legends is deep, but she never thought any of it could be real.

After being attacked by a large wolf while walking home alone, Mackenzie realizes something is not right. She heals quickly, has suddenly become super strong, and is experiencing mood swings that can’t possibly be normal. The myths she’s studying aren’t myths at all. Werewolves are real, and she’s one of them. Fear of what she is, and who she might hurt sends Mackenzie running from the life she’s worked hard to build–and straight into the arms of a handsome Were named Geoff and into the home of his pack. Living with her new pack takes the edge off her confusion and self-loathing, but the arrival of new pack members changes the dynamic, and tests Geoff and Mackenzie’s growing relationship.

The hardest part of being a werewolf is to have no control and no memory of her time as a bloodthirsty beast. When a moon cycle passes, and she is actually able to remember bits and pieces of the night, she starts to ask questions, and the more questions she asks, the more she realizes she doesn’t like the answers. Can she set aside her own sense of morals to belong to a pack that is like a family or will she leave everything behind yet again in search of a life she can be proud of?

**Excerpt**

Mackenzie could hear the entire pack in the talking and laughing from the hallway. When she rounded the corner into the dining room, she had hoped that Teresa or Natalie might have saved her a seat. Too bad her two supposed best friends were grinning wickedly at her, completely surrounded by full chairs.

Everyone quickly hushed and stared at her with silly grins on their faces and it wasn’t until she saw that the only open chair was directly between Geoff and Liam did she understand. They were all enjoying her predicament. It was no secret how she and Geoff were becoming closer, and it was definitely no secret that she and Liam had gone out.

Both men kept their eyes trained on Mackenzie. It wasn’t until she stood directly behind them and pulled out her chair that they acknowledged one another. Neither wanting to back down, they only lost eye contact when Mackenzie sat in between them. When it was obvious that she wasn’t going to give the group any form of entertainment, the noise returned to the room.

Realizing she hadn’t eaten since dinner the night before, Mackenzie loaded her plate. She could see Margret watching as both men tried to gain her attention. She didn’t ignore either, but also wouldn’t let the conversation venture toward anything that could put her in a position of choosing one man over the other. It may have been selfish, but she honestly didn’t know what to do.

“Geoff, how is the Alaska house fairing with the new influx?” Margret asked. The entire room quieted down once again and turned their attention to Geoff. He wiped his mouth with his napkin and returned it to his lap.

“They are doing well. Better than we expected. That’s why I was able to come back for a few days. I needed to get something and was worried that if I left it for too long, I might lose it. So I was very glad things are going well.” As he spoke, Mackenzie couldn’t help but notice how the girls in the room looked to her with a smile. Ever the romantics. Mackenzie didn’t believe he was speaking of her, she wasn’t a thing after all, and how could he lose something he never truly had?

“What did you forget?” Amanda, one of the older women asked with a grin. Mackenzie couldn’t believe they were pressing the issue, until she felt his hand snake up her thigh with only inches to her girly bits and squeeze. Trying to hide her shock, not only from the group as a whole, but also from Liam, who sat to the other side of her, she too used her napkin as a cover for putting her hands below the table. She placed her hand on top of his and moved it away.

“Doesn’t matter. Pretty sure it’s gone now.” Mackenzie’s heart ached. She wanted to tell him that no, it wasn’t gone. But she looked over to Liam and then back to Geoff and she couldn’t tell him that. It wasn’t all gone, but part of it was given to someone else.

**Guest Post**
With Adrianne James

Why I chose to write Werewolves over Vampires
I get this question a lot. The answer is simple. I fell in love with a story line that was werewolf centric. I have nothing against vampires, I love them actually. But for the story that was begging to be written, vampires would never have worked.

The Tempering (and the rest of the series) is a story about a girl trying to figure out her new life, when her life was just really getting started. It’s about learning who to trust and who not to. It’s about choices and how to deal with life when you have no choices. It’s about how complicated feelings and attraction can be. It’s about life and guilt over things you have no control over. For this story, Vampires just wouldn’t work.

Werewolves get to walk that thin line between human and paranormal and The Tempering shows Mackenzie trying to stay as far on the human side as possible…until she is shoved over and forced to deal with her paranormal side.

I might write a vampire story one day, but for now, Werewolves are it for me. Hot hunky werewolves. Yes, those will do JUST fine ;)

Growing up, Adrianne couldn't get her hands on enough books to satisfy her need for the make believe. If she finished a novel and didn't have a new one ready and waiting for her, she began to create her own tales of magic and wonder. Now, as an adult, books still make up majority of her free time, and now her tales get written down to be shared with the world.

During the day, Adrianne uses her camera to capture life's stories for clients of all ages and at night, after her two children are tucked in bed; she devotes herself to her written work. Adrianne is living the life she always wanted, surrounded by art and beauty, the written word and a loving family.

Book Review: Reality By Dani Hart

Reality
(The Life of Arie #1)
By Dani Hart

I am Arie Belle and up until my mother’s unexpected and mysterious death my life had been pretty simple, but then things became dark and, at times, hopeless. Even my uncanny ability to communicate with nature had turned its back on me. My only saving grace is my lifetime friendship with the boy next door, River, whom I had always thought of as my soul mate up until my eighteenth birthday when everything seemed to change.

My body tingles with heightened sensations and my emotions veer out of control. They are further tested when Ashe, a beautiful stranger with a powerful draw, enters my life and challenges my heart and soul. Amidst the rush of feelings after years of numbness, my true destiny slowly unravels and my journey to find out what I am, to find my mother’s killer, and stop my own death becomes a frantic rush before the next full moon.

This powerful story encaptures the true meaning of love and the dark corners of life that can either suck you in or save you.

My Review:

* Free eCopy was provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Let the ranting begin C:

I really, really, really wanted to like this book. I tried so hard! But it just wasn't for me. Even I can't explain why I started getting annoyed at the end. I stopped around Chapter 21 and even before that I was skimming, A LOT. My original rating would have been 2 stars (I'm just not a fan of this book), BUT for originality I'll add on a star.

This book started off really depressive. I didn't really mind, but Arie was just sooo URGH! She acted like the world revolved around her, her actions were really confusing and she was a push over. Especially with the love triangle added on. One moment she's in love with the first guy, but can't stop thinking about contender #2 and vise versa. That got on my nerves, fast. She also cried A LOT. Every other page she was crying for her mother, her father, River....on and on it goes. She had these visions that would cause her to lose hours of her day and she never second guessed anyone about them. Any rational person's reaction, would be to go to the hospital and get checked out first.

I also didn't get where the love triangle came from. River was the childhood BFF. I have one of those and I could NEVER see him as more then a friend. Ashe, on the other hand, was boyfriend material and the story even hinted at something more (though I never got my answer to that....-sign-). But, Ashe, in some scenes, also acted like an insecure teenage boy around 14-15 years old and that was strange.

Starling was OK. She was the only rational female character in this book. She was Arie's backbone. She always helped her, guarded her and pushed her to be with River. That was her only misstep.

One other problem I had while reading this book was "destiny". I just HATE when the character finally starts asking the important questions and the author just gives the "it must be revealed to you when it's time". That right there just ruined the moment for me.
